Hide & Seek

I think we can all admit that all of us have quirks, foibles, and tics that can be viewed on the continuum from "adorable" to "oh my god, will you please just stop". There's really no reason to go through examples of these things; as you read this, we're pretty sure that you are thinking about those that you have or (maybe) those that someone you know has.

The purpose of today's entry is to admit that each of us have our own 'shticks' and we can only hope that we fall on the "adorable" or "endearing" part of the continuum, not the "please leave. now" part, but the decision to accept us or reject us is completely yours (although, one of our quirks is to hope that everyone finds us and our antics adorable).
Rozi resting after a big meal

For Rozi, it has been well-documented that she loves food. Rozi has been known to wake from a sound sleep (and, yet another of Rozi's 'endearments' is to make a noise akin to a chain saw going through a telephone pole as she sleeps) in response to the rustling of paper (which she assumes means a box or package of food is being opened). She's crawled over people and other animals (i.e. Izzi) to get to treats when offered. She has (as recently as last week) eaten four (four!) dinners!

She also has a penchant for collapsing in places that can sometime irritate others, including but not limited to laps, feet, and heads.

Like we said, though, this is just how she is and we keep our fingers crossed that it's okay with everyone she knows.

Izzi, on the other hand, has her own 'thing' going: she has a very low threshold for anxiety, and she finds new places to just hide and barricade herself from the outside world. She often shakes so badly when she's nervous that some people have suggested modifying her ThunderJacket to include a pocket that they can slip a glass of milk and some Ovaltine into so that a milkshake can be made.

But, as with Rozi's mannerisms regarding food, Izzi's regarding solace are not all that strange, and in Izzi's case there are reasons for her current state:
1) Our mama left us a few weeks ago and we were left all alone in the house. Except for that man that feeds us and rubs our bellies and all that, but the point is that our mama was not here and she was gone for about 1,000 years. Then, she came home and we were happy happy happy.
2) But, then she left again and this time we slept with Evan (which we liked) and but she was gone for about a millennium. We were pretty sure that we were never going to see her ever again, but Rozi didn't mind as long as food was presented regularly (and - yum! - it was). Then, she came home and we were happy happy happy cubed.
3) Miriam came home and Izzi was out of her mind excited that Miriam came home because it meant that Izzi could sleep with Miriam and cuddle in her blankets. Then, Miriam left.

So, there have been a lot of changes in our house, and although Rozi is a rock when it comes to change (as long as food is put out at least twice a day), Izzi is more sensitive. So, Izzi has been finding places to relax, and since our Mama refuses to send us to a doggie spa (and - to be honest - we wouldn't want to go to one because it would probably be just like when we get our hair cut and there are [hate to say this] other dogs there!).
Izzi in the closet

The places that Izzi likes to escape from the world are:
  • The bench in mama's bedroom. There are usually clothes of mama on the bench, and Izzi likes to curl up and sleep and shut out the world and forget how nervous she is about all the comings and goings. But, recently, our mama moved the clothes and so it's less cuddly and so Izzi has found...
  • The closet. In the closet, there is a mountain of scarves from our mama that Izzi can get lost in. And it's also dark and quiet in there, so Izzi can really escape.
  • Miriam's bedroom, especially Miriam's closet. Since this is downstairs and it's super extra quiet there, this has become one of Izzi's favorite places to slip off the grid. The fact that Rozi doesn't know how to go down the stairs is a bonus.
  • A new place is the laundry room, on a fresh pile of clean clothes. This is like the best of everything: it's downstairs (no Rozi), it's dark, it's quiet, and there are clothes to cuddle into.
So, yes, we have quirks. So, yes, we have shticks. So, yes, we have foibles. But, we're allowed. We're puppies!
