Like a four-dimensional chess match

We'll admit that most of the time, there is a quiet camaraderie that exists between the two of us. Most mornings, for example, we share snuggling with our mama, and we're happy to take turns for that (and by "take turns", we mean that Rozi snuggles with our mama until Izzi noses her way in and Rozi walks away). And, then sometimes we wrestle on the floor (a girl needs to work out to keep herself fit!) until we get distracted by a dust mote or movement from our mama. The long afternoons are spent in reverie, with Rozi usually in a little circle of sun on the living room floor and Izzi at her post on the back of the couch, ensuring that no person, stroller, bicycle, or doggie pauses for more than a nanosecond in front of our house.
What's that rustling noise?

But, there are some situations where it's a chess match that would make Fisher and Spassky's matches seem like preschoolers playing Sorry. Those times are when we get treats.

Now, we know that we have spoken of them before (treats, that is; we likely have not made a chess reference on this blog, but we're easily distracted and it's possible that we ha...where were we?). But, we wanted to give you a sense of the tension and the "pata a la pata" combat and the matching of wits that goes on when we get a treat. This afternoon's events are the perfect classroom for this.

Earlier today, we were relaxing in our upstairs apartment. We sleep there, and Izzi sometimes spends her afternoon on the bench there, but it's not a place that we typically spend much of our day. Today was an exception though, and since we were both there and since we were both told we were "good girls", we were pretty happy. We did not think we could be any happier.

And, then, we got a surprise: a treat!

A big green treat, a kind of treat that we had not seen in a long time. As soon as we heard the treats rustle around, we got excited. Rozi started to jump on her back legs and Izzi made a circle on the bench, too excited to get down.

Then, the treats appeared and we were almost as excited as when our mama comes home! Izzi took hers and jumped down to the floor and Rozi took hers and walked around with it. Well, moved a couple of steps and then dropped it. And, in doing so, she decided that she'd prefer Izzi's. Now, this may seem a bit peculiar, since the treats were almost definitely exactly the same, but we're no so sure. Right after Rozi dropped hers, Izzi did the same in the same place.

Izzi is in control

And, then the standoff began. For a while, neither of us moved, both content to keep our eyes on the prize (as it were). Then, Izzi made the bold move of scooping up one of the treats and taking it to the other side of the big white thing that we sit and play on, and Rozi kept watching the other treat. After a while, Izzi settled down and the two of us just waited for the other one to make a mistake. If Izzi walked away, Rozi would be able to scoop up one and then the other. If Rozi walked away, Izzi could do that.
Rozi plots her strategy

The clock ticked away, and both of us (and the treats!) didn't move. Then, there was a sound from downstairs, and Izzi started to move toward it, but in doing so, saw that her treat was left unprotected and that Rozi had started to very slowly move toward it. Torn by the urge to protect the house and the urge to protect her treat, Izzi chose to stay and keep her eye on the little green thing (and was fortunate that no one tried to come into our house and take things, like the teddy bear we were playing with).
The game is afoot!

This game went on for ever and ever...almost 5 minutes! Then, we both suddenly, gave up, took our treats in our mouth, and walked out of our apartment.

Now, you're all probably wondering just what happened to those treats, those treats that we so carefully guarded for such a long time. Well, we'll tell you: it's a secret!

All you need to know is that either they were yummy or they will be yummy or both (since some times we eat some of our treat and hide the rest for another time).
