A Howling Good Time

Fear is an interesting emotion. It's not like sadness, where you can watch a movie about a coyote getting run over by a roadrunner driving a steamroller to snap you out of it. It's not like melancholy when you can jump up on your mama's lap and have her pet you until the blues go away. It's not like hunger, where you can find something to eat even when it's not dinner time (and - yes - while we understand that "hunger" is not an "emotion" for people, it certainly is for some dogs. Us. Well, Rozi).
But fear? Fear is something that's hard to shake. Sure, you can crawl into bed and hide under the covers if it's bedtime and mama's in the bed and you can crawl up next to her. Or, if mama is cooking food on the stove and you're shaking, you can maybe find someone to pick you up so that your little body stops shaking more often than a cocktail shaker at a frat party. But, what about the rest of the time? What about if you're alone on a Sunday because your mama is gone and your sister is downstairs and taking a nap and you look around and you don't know what to do and you're afraid?
Simple. You howl:

Does this make you any less afraid? Sadly, no. But, it lets the world know that you're a little afraid and that you wish that someone came around to be with you. Most of the time that could be your sister or your mama or someone who's just hanging around your house, but there are other times that you just can't rely on that and we have to say that the very act of putting your head back and howling is therapeutic and it makes the being afraid less being afraid that it might be. So, what happens next? Well, if we're alone and no one comes to visit us, we just get tired (see the end of the video) and crash.
Now, we're not suggesting that everyone do this because let's be honest. Not everyone is nearly as cute as we are and we can get pull it off. We mean, imagine if we were raccoons or sewer rats: we'd howl and you wouldn't be saying, "Aww!" You'd be saying "Eww!" Still, the fact that we can pull this off is all we're looking to do.
And, of course, when your sister comes back and makes you feel better, you feel a little embarrassed that you made such a big deal out of being alone.
