A Great Dane

"To sleep, perchance to Dream; Aye, there's the rub."

So, you can see why, when we were recently reading Hamlet (as part of our summer exercise of working our way through as much of Shakespeare and Bacon as we can...well, as much bacon as we can anyway) that this particular line stood out. You see, we both love to sleep, something that has been documented on these 'pages' over and over again. The number of bytes this has used up is roughly equal to the number of bites that Rozi uses up when eating the afore-mentioned cured meat, but we digress.

Sleeping is, has been, and always will be important to us. And, like the troubled Dane said: something about a rub. And, that's so true, because there really is nothing quite like taking a long nap and having someone rub your belly as you dream. Ahhhh.

But, the question that we wanted to toss around today is: just where does that "sleep" take place? Oh, sure, when it's night time and we fight to get into the best position with our mama, or even to play "pup tent", it on the big, soft, cozy bed that we sleep. Sure, we sometimes fight (with each other, feet, and Izzi's boyfriend the stuffed bear) on the bed, and sometimes...well, most of the time...we have a snack on the bed before going to sleep. But, then we get to the main activity of the evening, and drift away. Some mornings, Rozi doesn't even wake up early, content to be curled up and zoned out.

Where, then, do we sleep during the 16 or so hours that we're not in the big comfy bed? Well, it depends on which one of us you're asking.

For Izzi, there are the 'common' places that she likes to sleep: the back of the couch; the back of the other couch; the back of the green chair, where she can patrol the back yard. But, there are some places that are uniquely Izzi.

One example is the bench in our bedroom. From here, Izzi can easily stand on the window sill, looking down at the street below, and carefully and succinctly telling passersby to "keep moving" (although not in those words). More importantly, there is a nest of clothes that she can curl up in and enjoy both the softness and mama-feel of the clothes she's sleeping on, she can also, on most days, have the warmth of the sun on her back. In many ways, this is an ideal place to nap, because of both the ambiance of it, and the fact that Rozi doesn't come up there.
Sunbeam on my back; clothes underneath me. This is gonna be a great nap!

Also, there are times that Izzi wants to just get away from it all, but still wants to have a chance to just relax. And, that's why she takes a quick trip into the closet, where the clothes are piled even higher than on the bench, and it's dark and quiet, which maximizes the quality of her sleep. True that she tends to go there when the world is getting to be too much (like when there's rain coming, or when there's thunder, or when there's a disturbing noise), but she also chooses to go there at other times, just for the zen-like habitat that is the closet.
There is no reason to leave the quiet closet. Please go away so I can resume my rest!

Rozi, too, enjoys taking naps on the furniture around the house, including the same couches that Izzi naps on, but usually Rozi sleeps on the cushions, leaving Izzi to man the top of the couch and shout out when interlopers approach.

On the other hand, Rozi tends to find a place to take a nap, and then plops down (sometimes audibly). She likes her little beds, which - for the most part - Izzi avoids (although Izzi does seem, from time to time, to be searching Rozi's downstairs/green bed for some hidden treasures). In Rozi's upstairs/pink bed, she can crawl into it and be snug as if being cradled by a soft pink pair of hands. Sometimes, she sleeps like a normal puppy, but most of the time, she sleeps like this:
Did somebody say, "ah, there's the rub"? Because I didn't get one yet.

And, there's also the area that is best described as "anywhere that isn't moving". That would be the floor of the bedroom, the floor of the kitchen, the floor of the living room, the floor of...well, you get the idea. While none of these sleeping places is as soft and comfortable as her own bed, Rozi likes that she doesn't have to go too far to find a comfortable place to nap. And, the bonus of the floor is that it's usually nice and cool, so that she can stretch out and have the warmth sucked out of her body by the cool floor.
Sometimes, you just need to stop in the middle of a walk,,
take a nap wherever you are, then start again.

We know that other puppies have special other places to sleep, like water beds (for the lucky ones) and cages (for the ones who aren't so lucky).

But, we think that we have the best places in the world to take a nap. So, unlike our ancient friend, Hamlet, we don't have to think about whether to be or not to be: we choose to be. Asleep!

Arf, Yip, Yip, Yip,
Izzi & Rozi
